In 2015, the internet was abuzz with the news that a woman in India had been awarded the title of ‘world’s most famous jewellery designer’.
The news has since been widely shared on social media.
However, the award was not presented by a jewellery company, but a charity, The Jana Foundation.
The foundation’s CEO and founder, Dr Kalyan Shah, claimed that she was the only person to design the necklace, as the only female jeweller.
However the award did not go down well with the public.
Some claimed that the jewellery had been made from a “cheap plastic” that was “grossly overpriced”.
Many also questioned the charity’s motives in awarding the title.
What is a Jana foundation?
A Jana charity is a non-profit organisation established in 2008, which works to protect and promote the values of Jana (the Indo-Persian religion).
The foundation focuses on education and awareness raising for children, the elderly and disabled.
The charity is funded by the Government of India and is administered by the Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRRD).
The Jna Foundation has been working in India since 2007 and is now one of the country’s largest non-governmental organisations, with more than 50,000 employees.
The organisation works to promote cultural heritage, promote community development, promote health and wellness, and provide services to the disadvantaged.
Why is this a big deal?
It was only a few months ago that Shah claimed to have designed a necklace for the award.
According to Shah, the necklace was inspired by a “beautiful necklace worn by a girl from my home village”.
The necklace, which was a gift from her family, was designed to make the recipient feel special and to express the strength and power of her Jana heritage.
The necklace was designed with “love, love, love” in mind.
It is not known if Shah was actually inspired by the necklace or if she simply chose a symbol to represent her own identity.
The jewellery was made in India, but the charity was not registered with the Ministry of HRRD.
In 2017, the Jana International Council (JIC) of the JANA Foundation was set up by Shah.
The JICA has since given around $1 million to various charitable organisations in India.
It has also been praised by the countrys Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was recently shown wearing a JANA necklace.
Is this a case of bias against women?
Shah said she has no bias towards women, but that there were “certain social norms in society”.
According to her, the jewellers “are being paid less” and “more money is being spent on these sorts of things”.
She added that the charity is working towards making Jana the “national symbol of JANA”.
However, she also admitted that the organisation does not have the resources to carry out the task of safeguarding the heritage of Janna.
Does the award mean that Jana has lost its identity?
According to a report by the Economic Times, the jewelry was made from “cheaper plastic” and is “gross, plastic and cheap”.
The JANA foundation did not respond to a request for comment on the matter.
